What Are CEREC Same-Day Dental Crowns?

Same-day dental crowns are customized dental restorations that are crafted using computer-aided design and manufacturing. They give us the ability to design and create your crown without needing to send your impressions to a dental laboratory at a different location and wait multiple weeks for the final product. Instead, we will make your restoration right here at our practice!

The goal of same-day dental crowns is the same as a traditional one – they are used to protect teeth that are weak, damaged, or decayed. Unlike traditional dental crowns that require two separate appointments, CEREC crowns are made and placed on the same day.

The Process of Getting a CEREC Same-Day Dental Crown

The first step when getting a CEREC crown is for your dentist to remove a small portion of enamel from the tooth. A local anesthetic is used to numb the area, so you shouldn’t feel any discomfort. Then, we will take digital impressions and generate a 3D model of your tooth. This is sent from the computer to our in-office milling machine. After approximately an hour, the machine crafts a crown from tooth-colored dental material. This is completely personalized to match the size, shape, and color of your natural tooth. Lastly, your dental crown will be secured in place. Some final adjustments may be made. Once everything feels and looks great, you will be sent on your way!

The Benefits of CEREC Crowns vs. Traditional Crowns

CEREC dental crowns allow for several additional benefits. Here are some of the most prominent ones.

  • Convenience: You only need to attend one appointment instead of two.
  • No Temporary Crown: When receiving a traditional dental crown, you need to wear a temporary one for a couple of weeks between your appointments. This isn’t as comfortable or durable as your final restoration. CEREC dental crowns don’t require this step.
  • Cost: Many people assume that same-day crowns are more expensive than traditional ones, but this isn’t always the case. Same-day dental crowns are often comparable in price to traditional ones in terms of cost.

Understanding the Cost of CEREC Dental Crowns

Instead of having to go to separate dental appointments several weeks apart, CEREC dental crowns allow patients to get their new restoration during a single visit! Since everyone’s treatment is a little bit different, the cost can vary. During your appointment, we can go over the cost of your treatment in detail so that you don’t run into any surprises. Until then, here are some things to keep in mind.

Factors That Affect the Cost of CEREC Dental Crowns

Here are some of the factors that can affect the cost of your CEREC dental crown:

  • Severity of Damage: If you need another treatment before getting your crown, like a filling or root canal, this will have its own cost.
  • Location of Tooth: Crowns that are in the front of the mouth are generally cheaper because they don’t require as much material as crowns in the back of the mouth.
  • Material Used: CEREC crown costs may vary depending on what type of material is chosen. We use ceramic because of its durability and natural appearance.

Remember that the cheapest dental crown is not always the most ideal. Quality is very important when it comes to your restorations. You want your crown to be both structurally sound and visually appealing.

Does Dental Insurance Cover CEREC Dental Crowns?

Dental insurance form

Dental crowns are usually considered by dental insurance providers to be a “major restorative treatment.” This means that it is covered at about 50% after your annual deductible has been met and before your maximum has been exceeded. At North Jacksonville complete dentistry, we are proud to be in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida, Cigna, and Delta Dental. If you have another insurance, we are still happy to file your claims as a courtesy.

Options for Making CEREC Dental Crowns Affordable

If you don’t have dental insurance, this doesn’t mean that you are completely out of luck. We are happy to accept payments through CareCredit – a third-party financing company that can split the cost of your treatment into manageable monthly installments with little to no interest. If you have any questions or need help applying, don’t hesitate to contact us.

CEREC Same-Day Dental Crown FAQs

Who is Eligible to Receive a CEREC Same-Day Crown?

CEREC same-day crowns are used to treat the same oral health issues as lab-made restorations. These devices can address large cracks, misshapenness, severe dental damage or decay, or even stubborn enamel stains.

What is the Difference Between Traditional and CEREC Same-Day Crowns?

Traditional and CEREC same-day crowns are quite similar, but they are distinguished in several key ways. For example:

  • Your dentist crafts and places your CEREC dental crown in-office based on ultra-precise measurements taken with a specialized digital scanning device. Traditional crowns, on the other hand, are crafted over about two weeks by a dental technician at a lab. The CEREC process keeps the process of manufacturing your crown under one roof, which can lead to a better fit for your restorations as well as a more pleasing appearance.
  • CEREC crowns are placed in one appointment, which eliminates the need for a two-week waiting period so your restoration can be crafted and a follow-up appointment that may require you to take more time off work. This can make the process more economical as well as more convenient.
  • Since CEREC dental crowns do not require the patient to wear temporary restorations, they won’t have to worry about the dietary restrictions these devices require.

What’s the Cost Difference Between CEREC Same-Day and Lab-Made Crowns?

Many patients assume that CEREC same-day crowns from North Jacksonville Complete Dentistry must be incredibly costly, but this is not the case. CEREC crowns are often priced similarly to traditional restorations, and they can be at least partially covered by dental insurance since they are often medically necessary. While same-day crowns may be several hundred dollars more costly than traditional appliances, this additional expense may be cancelled out by the patient not needing to take more time off work. CEREC crowns are also an excellent investment in your confidence and oral health since they are remarkably lifelike in feel and appearance and may last for fifteen years or more if they receive excellent care.

How Durable Are CEREC Crowns?

While metal crowns may be slightly more durable than porcelain CEREC crowns, the difference is often negligible. CEREC restorations are comparable to traditional ceramic crowns in lifespan and strength, and porcelain is durable enough to withstand the pressures of chewing. With excellent care, your same-day crown may last between ten and fifteen years or possibly longer. To keep your restorations in great shape, be sure to abstain from smoking, practice excellent oral hygiene, keep up with regular dental appointments at our Jacksonville office, and be careful when chewing.
