Do you often get migraines? You may already know how debilitating they can be, and you might be trying out different ways to lessen them or address the problem. While you likely are partnering with your primary care provider, did you know your dentist might be of some help? This is especially true if you have temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder. Keep reading to learn how treating this condition may help your migraines.

What’s The Link Between TMD and Migraines?

If you have TMJ disorder (TMD), then it’s often a sign that your jaw joints are damaged or might be overworked. It often leads to pain, trouble opening and closing your mouth, a clicking or popping noise, and headaches, to name a few.

As studies come out about TMD, there may be some evidence of how it can contribute to migraines. Researchers in Brazil studied individuals, breaking them into three different sections: those having no history of migraines, those having an episodic occurrence, and those who experience migraines chronically.

Among them, TMD symptoms were observed. In the control group, about 54% of the participants had signs of this jaw condition, but the number jumped up to 80% and 100% for the other two groups, respectively.

So, Does TMD Cause Migraines?

While this study did show a tie between TMJ disorder and migraines, it’s hard to say whether the former causes the latter since it’s a neurological issue. More research is needed, but the link may be because of nerve endings called nociceptors. They help process pain, but TMD can constantly activate them, making migraines feel worse or potentially trigger them.

Is There Anything I Can Do to Treat TMD?

Some people can prevent their migraines by avoiding bright lights, loud noises, and certain foods, but others may find some success in treating their TMD. Not only may it help with this neurological condition, but you can also find relief from the discomfort you feel in your TMJ.

A solution that your dentist may offer is an oral device that you wear during the night. It helps shift your jaw alignment to stop any grinding or clenching that you may do. Additionally, certain medications may help reduce stress, but your dentist can let you know what’s best for you. In the end, you might be able to reduce how often you get migraines and how severe they are!
