Why Are My Invisalign Trays Turning Yellow? What Can I Do About It?
October 6, 2025

An orthodontic treatment that’s been on the rise is Invisalign. It’s becoming more popular with teens and adults alike because of its discreet appearance. You won’t have to deal with any metal wires or brackets, so your smile stays looking great. However, for some patients, they may notice that their aligners are starting to turn a bit yellow. Here’s why it happens and what you can do to get rid of the tint.
How Can Invisalign Trays Turn Yellow?
Pinpointing the exact reason for your yellowing Invisalign can be a bit difficult because it can be a mix of multiple different things. These are some culprits that may cause it:
- Dark-colored drinks, such as red wine, coffee, and sodas, can not only stain your teeth but also your aligners as well. The plastic is porous, so particles can find their way into these spots and stay in there.
- If you rinse with colored mouthwash while wearing your trays, then this can be the reason. If it has color, then it can eventually lead to stains. Instead, take out your Invisalign or swish with water afterward.
- Your saliva is made of water, minerals, proteins, mucus, and enzymes. When it has the chance to dry on your trays, it can cause discoloration.
- The plaque on your teeth can transfer to your aligners if you don’t clean out your smile. It can harden on them and lead to a yellow color.
What Can I Do to Get Rid of The Tint?
While there may be several different reasons for the stains, there are easy steps you can follow to lessen your risk of developing them. The best thing you can do is brush and floss after you eat. This will remove any particles, debris, and plaque from your teeth, ensuring that they don’t transfer to your Invisalign. As well, rinse your mouth with water after your meals to wash away anything that may be lingering.
Is there anything you can do about stained aligners? Thankfully, there are! You can brush them with a mixture of white vinegar and water or diluted hydrogen peroxide. Both of these can dissolve some of the yellow discoloration. While they may not get rid of it completely, they can help you feel better about wearing them until you swap over to your next, clear set. Keep the above tips in mind, and that way, your Invisalign stays nearly invisible.
