While the cases of oral cancer continue to increase, thankfully, it is\none of the most treatable cancers. Especially if caught early on, you have a\ngood chance at a full recovery. That\u2019s why oral cancer screenings are so\nimportant. Keep reading to learn more about oral cancer screenings, how often\nyou should get them, and what you can expect during an examination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is an Oral Cancer Screening?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Dentists alone catch 84% of oral cancers early on, giving\ntheir patients the ability to seek treatment immediately to ensure their\nhealth. Oral cancer screenings only last a matter of minutes during your\nroutine dental checkup, so it\u2019s possible you may have had one without even\nknowing it. Your screening will consist of a noninvasive, visual and physical\nexam to check for these symptoms:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>White or red patches in your mouth<\/li><li>Lumps, bumps, or growths<\/li><li>Difficulty or pain swallowing<\/li><li>Sores that won\u2019t heal<\/li><li>Pain in your mouth<\/li><li>Pain in your ears<\/li><li>Changes in color of soft tissue<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Occurs During an Oral Cancer Screening?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>During your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northjacksonvillecompletedentistry.com\/oral-cancer-screenings.html\">oral\ncancer screening<\/a>, your dentist will visually and physically examine your\nmouth, head, neck, gums, tongue. Cheeks, throat, and any other related areas\nfor irregularities or warning signs. After, they may feel around your jawbone\nand lymph nodes to ensure there aren\u2019t any lumps or growths to be concerned\nabout. If they do spot any areas that could tip off cancer, they might order a\nbiopsy or additional tests for further investigation. Your dentist never wants\nto find cancer, but early detection is your first step towards a full recovery.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Often Should I Receive an Oral Cancer Screening?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your dentist will perform an oral cancer screening at each or\nevery other one of your biannual dental checkups. You may be more susceptible\nto oral cancer if you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Smoke or use tobacco routinely<\/li><li>Heavily consume alcohol<\/li><li>Have a family history of oral cancer<\/li><li>Have had prolonged exposure to sunlight.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have any of these risk factors, your dentist may\ndecide that an oral cancer screening every 6 months is necessary.
